get involved

The mentor craftsmen who come together every week are the very backbone of Tacoma Boat Builders. Each youth is paired, one-to-one, with a mentor. These pairs work together on small projects, which have ranged from toolboxes to guitars, based on their mutual interest, while also pulling together in larger groups for work on the wooden boats. In addition, we are blessed with many other volunteers with backgrounds in the mental health, social services, project management, and education who have rallied to support the youth.

How to volunteer

The volunteers of Tacoma Boat Builders are a dedicated group of folks coming to us from many backgrounds and areas of experience. Some are master craftspeople and artisans, others are great listeners and teachers. The most important thing we look for in our volunteers who work with youth is a willingness to meet them where they are and share their life experience with them. If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.
